An October Tale for a quick break

A little known slice of a familiar story.

It was a dark and stormy night...
Only a sliver of the pale moon occasionally gleamed through the ominous gray clouds. A distant haunting symphony of foreboding howls broke the nights silence and scared the black birds from the high leafless branches of the trees.
The agitating clamor angrily awoke the old owl whose large glowing eyes appeared in the dark fog of the night. With a quick shake to throw the water from his oily feathers the rapture raised his immense wings and took flight from the dead limb of the hollowed and rotting blackthorn tree. The distant storm grew closer.
A window high in the long abandoned tower flickered with candle light. The dripping wet owl and his glowing eyes came to rest on the high window sill and he hungrily glared at a scrawny mouse on the floor inside.
Upon seeing the predator the rodent began to frantically scurry across the cold limestone. He raced under the old wooden tables and around the decaying books strewn about the floor and quickly scampered under the well-worn heels of the black boots of the crazed old scientist whose laboratory he dwelled in.
The scientist paid no attention to the commotion. Hunched over and completely engulfed in his work he manically checked his beakers of boiling chemicals. Mumbling gibberish madness of mathematical equations and alchemy, he adjusted his cracked glasses which had slipped to the very tip of his nose. He then slowly turned and raised his head upward.
His wide open bloodshot eyes followed the dripping wet and sparking bare copper wires. His gaze began from where the frayed wires were crudely attached to a shadowy form that was strapped to a cold rusty metal gurney in the middle of the room. From there his slow unblinking black pupils followed the wires all the way up the tower and through the jagged hole in the roof.
The storm outside raged ever more fiercely and pounded against the tower, the violent wind threw a branch through the window. The owl quickly seized the moment and flew into the room to claim his reward. The scientist fell to his knees and extended his arms above the wiry hair on his balding head. With his black surgeon gloves still on and covered with chemicals and ooze he opened his cracked lips and unclenched his rotting teeth to let out a horrific laugh, ahhhh ha ha ha ha heee! He knew the time had come. Again he laughed, Ahhhh ha ha ha ha eeeeeEEEE!
With a thunderous crash crackling lighting streaked from the darkest gray cloud and struck the old copper wires sending the voltage of a million years through the wire and to the form strapped to the rusty table. Suddenly all the candles went dark.
The storm still pounded but there was a long, long silence...
silence....
   silence....
then quietly in the darkest black of the room a faint red light flickered and then began a steady pulsing beat, the scientists knew he had done it. The first hosted VoIP solution was alive.

...but the hunger for technology was not quenched.
Story written with respect and thanks to Mrs. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
